THE BURNING MOON
Review by Blake ReddingWARNING:
All movies reviewed for SUNDAY SNUFF contain graphic depictions that may include rape, live animals being murdered, and extreme gore. None of the writers condone such acts we just watch this shit.
On this fine Sunday, I took the pleasure of eating my eggs and toast while watching a little known German flick called THE BURNING MOON. The writer/director of this movie basically made it to showcase his impressive special effects skills. Shot completely on videotape, it looks a lot like a high school film project, until the violence and gore hits the screen. It was so gory in fact that it was banned in Germany for 20 years!
The first story tells the tale of an escaped serial killer. He tracks a woman to her home and graphically murders her whole family. He does some decapitating, stabbing, and even lights a dead body on fire for good measure. The killer eventually captures his victim and force-feeds her a ripped out eyeball. Yeah, you read that right. It’s some pretty nasty stuff. Finally a cop shows up and explodes the killer’s head with a well-placed gunshot sending brains and blood everywhere. The gore is so over the top it almost adds a comedic tone to it. It’s violence and gore for the sake of, well, violence and gore and I am completely OK with that.
The second tale is just plain insane. A priest goes bat shit crazy on a rape and murder spree. There is only one rape scene shown, but it was pretty graphic kids. Pretty soon we get a glimpse into hell itself. People are getting nails driven into their eyes and their teeth drilled out with power tools. One guy is forced to watch his own intestines get pulled out inch by inch before getting ripped in half…sideways. This movie may rival DEAD ALIVE with how much fake blood was used in the production.
THE BURNING MOON was a pretty interesting watch. It was a little too over the top to really be disturbing. I viewed it as more of a horror special effects showcase. The goofy and over the top acting just added to the whole campy vide. The German accents were an added comedic bonus. Don’t get me wrong though, this movie is still pretty brutal. Just ask the guy who had a machete shoved down his throat.
A few things to look out for is the limited edition VHS from Intervision. And also the limited edition print by Johnny Ryan who does the comic Prison Pit.
Rape: 3 out of 5, Only one, but it is graphic enough.
Realistic Gore: 4 out of 5, The gore is what this movie was all about! Over the top and plentiful.
Animal Death: 0 out of 5, None here folks.
Necrophilia: 0 out of 5, All the horrible shit happens to living people. They only wished they were dead.
Torture: 5 out of 5, All of the physical torture is pretty intense. Especially the guy getting his teeth yanked!
Overall Movie: I give it a 3 out of 5, but Jimmy was a big fan and gives it a 5 out of 5!
