Nutsack Part One: Lucifer's Cosmonauts

Nutsack Part One: Lucifer’s Cosmonauts
By Freddy Funbuns

“The loves we share with a city are often secret loves.”
~Albert Camus, Summer in Algiers

A truly strong filmmaker can create amazing cinema with little to no budget.  Whether that be hiring talented local actors for little to no money, guilting friends to help build sets or do special effects, or utilizing the urban scrawl of their environment for sets, inspiration, or as a character itself.  Richard Powell does it by taking brilliant little known actors and turning them loose in amazingly written parts.  Marcus Koch exploited his knack for gore in his over the top crazy clown flick 100 Tears,  and James Bell uses the mummified shell of suburban Detroit to create a destitute wasteland in his 4th film, Nutsack Part One: Lucifer’s Cosmonauts.

Nutsack Part One is an amalgam of sub-genre cliches that exceed your expectations and mold together into a idiosyncratic viewing experience.  Nutsack Part One can be blown off as a cheap ‘Creature Feature,’ with a tentacled creature running amok by way of clear filament guided appendages, it can be misconstrued as a lowball exploitation flick showing a scene of simulated oral sex and a tentacled rape with full nudity, and it can be considered a cash grab running off James Bell’s recent success of Tantrum that has been featured in Rue Morgue magazine and the Nordic gore publication Goregasmic Cinema.  In my opinion I don’t think Nutsack Part One is any of these things, I think it’s another leap in creative filmmaking from a lunatic director that is growing with every picture he makes.

A stand out aspect in Nutsack Part One that I haven’t really hardened my colon over with other James Bell films is his use of scene composition.  There are a lot of long establishing shots with strong linear and angular objects dictating the scene and all of which came from chunks of abandoned buildings around his town.  Scenes where James’ orange sweater clad, aquiline character lurches past slatted walls, graffiti covered ply wooded windows, and up stairs with hypodermic looking handrails, are all visually incredible and pit the viewer in his own dismal environment.  Bell’s gore and special effects are also ratcheting up by the movie.  Nutsack Part One displays a great creature that looks like a KY covered turd that fell out of a HIV Positive prostitute, explosive arterial spray, great silicone molds, and a splatter gore ending worthy of being side by side with James Muro’s Street Trash.

I also love the low-fi brooding music though out Nutsack.  Instead of taking the easy route and re-enlisting the Slings who did the lauded soundtrack to Tantrum, James opted to do the music himself on some archaic piece of shit that Emerson, Lake, and Palmer probably wouldn’t even touch.   The soundtrack varies in volume and rhythm  and forces you to pay attention to it whether you like it or not.

So what is Nutsack Part One: Lucifer’s Cosmonauts about?  Just fucking buy it; $10 for the regular version with the cover painted by yours truly or spring for the two great gore covers by Horror Artist Joe Meredith for a whopping $15.  You will not be let down.

Dog Dick or White Trash Holocaust

The mark of a truly great piece of film will be it's ability to subjugate the viewer.  Furthermore if one can be as captivated by a movie after numerous viewings in separate frames of mind, such as being shit faced drunk, being under the influence of fentanyl patches, or just plain ol’ sober proves the film’s aptitude to engage the viewer.  This, however, doesn’t mean a film has any redeeming qualities or has any integrity as a whole piece of work.  To draw a line in the sand and make any type of judgment about a movie is a completely subjective journey and as a viewer of the movie DOG DICK by filmmaker James Bell, I am crawling on the ceiling trying to wrap my head around what the hell I watched.  Is this the fucking dumbest movie ever made?  To some people it definitely is.  Is this an insanely brilliant piece of mondo filmmaking that is in tune with the dark comedic undertones and blunt social depictions of other mondo films such as the legendary MONDO CANE?  It could be, but I almost don’t trust DOG DICK enough to try and rationalize it in any way.  Am I fooled into trying to analyze something that has scenes of dead squirrels being run over by cars and some guy repeatedly slamming the dried out shell of a dead horse?  Or am I naïve to DOG DICK’S brilliance?  I don’t know, but I will continue to follow this mange infested rabbit down it’s fecal lined rabbit hole.  So friends, you might be asking, "What is DOG DICK?"

If David Lynch or Harmony Korine made a documentary about the monotonous life in a town where Beavis and Butthead could possibly live and set it to the artistic constraints of a handheld camera you would have at the very least the groundwork and tone to DOG DICK.  James Bell edits a stream of video full of the idiosyncrasies we have all seen living amongst the so called 99% of the American population - aka shit kicking uneducated rednecks who get drunk, use food stamps to buy cigarettes, gossip about dead coworkers, and try to make baby birds fly before they are physically able.  Bell also incorporates cringe worthy footage of dead cats being lit on fire, a retarded girl playing wii, and plenty of other clips that paints a reality known as white trash hell.  DOG DICK creates a claustrophobic nightmare that seems like the ideal environment to breed spree killers and school shooters and I loved every moment of it.

It’s not too often you see a filmmaker who literally has no filter when it comes to filmmaking and actively participates in borderline criminal activity on film.  James Bell not only has a keen eye for deciphering and grimly presenting the ubiquitous surroundings he lives in, he created a fucking bleak documentary worthy of any Sociology class teaching about white trash and the blatantly obvious decline of civilization.  Like I said before, DOG DICK will either be one of the worst things you have ever seen or it will be a directionless and unsettling documentary that will require multiple viewings and a lot of head scratching.  As of now this is a small batch release that can be only obtained by contacting director James Bell at corpsehummper@yahoo.com, but soon our good buddies over at King of the Witches Video will be doing a limited release at http://kingofthewitches.storenvy.com. Viewer beware.
