THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (2009)

By: Senor Woo

Last week my cohort and partner in crime, Jimmy Squarejaw, re visited the 1972 horror cult-classic THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT.  I have much respect for what Wes Craven did in regards to making a no holds bar rape and revenge flick that shocked the hell out movie goers in the early 1970’s. It took some big ol’ balls and seemingly paid off for the director in terms of making a name for himself in the horror community. When the 2009 remake was announced, you could hear horror movie fans across the country scream ‘foul’ in unison. I waited for it to come out on DVD before giving it a watch and HOLY SHIT, it was pretty damn good!

The story is pretty much the same with a few differences here and there (thank God they didn’t include the two idiot cops from the original, they were always my biggest pet peeve with that flick!) Little sweet booty Mari and her hot to trot friend meet up with a guy there age and end up smoking some weed in his hotel room. Unfortunately for the girls, the kid isn’t traveling alone. That’s when we get introduced to Krug and his marry band of violent, rapey friends. The girls are taken into the woods to be humiliated, tortured, raped, and killed. While the rape scene isn’t quite as intense as the original, it still makes you squirm and you probably wouldn’t want to watch it with your girlfriend or mother. Mari’s friend gets a knife to the stomach while Mari attempts to swim to safety, but ends up taking a bullet for her troubles and is left for dead. Krug and the crew get caught up in a storm and are taken in by a way too trusting couple…who also just so happen to be Mari’s parents. Let the revenge fly!

The intensity and gore is kicked up in the remake. Lots of stabbings, gunshot wounds, hammer to the head, and even a head that gets blown up in a microwave ( completely random scene.) My favorite scene is where Mari’s parents attempt to drown one of the guys in the sink while simultaneously turning his arm into ground beef in the garbage disposal. The great thing about this movie was the abundant amount of realistic violence. Lot's of nasty shit goes down for our sick viewing pleasure.  Unfortunately, the T&A was toned down, with only Krug’s flat chested girlfriend showing off the goods. Meh, better than nothing I guess.

It’s pretty hard to shock audiences these days, but THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT REMAKE did an excellent job at trying. I think fans of the original should give this one a shot, but view it as its own film and try not to do too much comparing to the original.  It’s a great revenge movie with lots of blood and violence. I dig it.

COMPLIANCE

By: Senor Woo

I have said it once, and I will say it again; Truth is always stranger than fiction. People can write stories, movies, and screenplays, all based on what they think is terrifying and disturbing, but at the end of the day, a truly troubled and psychopathic mind and soul will always chill us to the core. Most serial killers start out small. They dabble in being a peeping Tom, or making obscene phone calls to unsuspecting victims. Eventually, they grow tired of these ‘games’ and move on to bigger and better things, i.e. rape, sexual assault, torture, and murder. Most serial killers fly under the radar. They are typically Caucasian males, married with children, and lead a normal life with a nine to five job.  They often do as little as possible to draw attention to themselves, or make even a small splash in their social pond. David R. Stewart fits this profile to a ‘T’. Never heard of him? Well, neither had I until I watched COMPLIANCE. Let me paint you a picture of a man who I believe was on the verge of a calculated killing spree that would have made the BTK killer look like a dumb little baby.

I am an avid fan of true crime.  How this story evaded me for so long is a mystery. After watching the movie, I immediately did my research on the crime in question.  The man was a master manipulator; he had delusions of being in law enforcement, and was only armed with an AT&T calling card and a cordless phone. From 1992-2004, David R. Stewart terrorized a number of fast food restaurants by calling the manager claiming to be a police detective. He would give a detailed description of one of the female employees and state that they were under investigation for theft of a customer’s wallet/purse. The manager would then be instructed to take the employee into the back room and hold her there until he could arrive to bring her into the station. But in the mean time, the caller instructs the manager to conduct a strip search of the young employee. The demands would often get more obscure, such as conducting a cavity search on the employee, make her do jumping jacks naked, and even conduct oral sex on a male observer (actually the manager’s fiancĂ©) that the ‘detective’ appointed to act as security for the employee. How he gets all these people to go along with this clearly insane plan is beyond me.

COMPLIANCE is a scene-by-scene re creation of one of these calls that took place at a McDonald’s in 2004. The movie is based on police reports and actual security tape footage from the back office where this girl was sexually tormented and spends most of her time only wearing a fast food apron. Apparently the only differences are the girl in the movie is way hotter and doesn’t cry uncontrollably the whole time like the girl did in real life. The movie intends to make you feel as uncomfortable as possible, and it succeeds very well. Stylized and gritty, the flick gives you that “I need to take a shower” feel. The camera doesn’t shy away from the torment at hand, don’t you worry about that. The reason I chose this movie was for the sheer psychological manipulation and terror this guy was able unleash over the phone! In almost every case, he was able to have the victims do exactly what he wanted for his own sick amusement. The only complaint I do have about the movie is that the actress who plays the tormented girl, is sometimes a little too calm when all the naughty business is going down, but whatever, I quickly overlooked it and went along for the ride.

This case was the one that eventually got David Stewart caught after they traced his calling cards. The police suspect that he was responsible for nearly 70 of these calls. Unfortunately for the coppers, he was acquitted of all charges due to lack of evidence and was set free. Although there hasn’t been any more reported calls, this crazy fuck is roaming the streets, and most likely killing prostitutes and hiding their bodies in his crawl space. Sleep tight kids!

KILLER JOE

By Blake Redding
*WARNING*

All movies reviewed for SUNDAY SNUFF contain graphic depictions that may include rape, live animals being murdered, and extreme gore.  None of the writers condone such acts we just watch this shit.

“A totally twisted deep-fried Texas redneck trailer park murder story.” That’s the tagline of KILLER JOE and it sums it up perfectly. Directed by William Friedkin (THE EXCORCIST) and based on the 1993 play of the same name, this is a movie that I have had on my radar for a while now. I kept reading raving reviews and how awesome Matthew McConaughey is in it. Well, absolutely everything I read was true… this movie is fucking AWESOME! It completely exceeded my expectations.

A young trailer park man owes his drug dealers some money and they are going to kill him if he doesn’t pay up. Him and his half retarded redneck dad devise a plan to kill his deadbeat mother for her life insurance policy. They get in touch with Joe Cooper, a Dallas PD detective by day, and a hit man by night. The only problem with the plan is that they can’t pay Joe until they cash in on the insurance policy. So Joe takes a retainer; the guys jailbait little sister. Things get pretty creepy in a LOLITA kind of way. Unfortunately, the policy pays out to his mom’s boyfriend, not them. Now Killer Joe wants his money or he is keeping the retainer for his sex slave. Let the double crossing begin.

Matthew McConaughey can play a psychopath like nobodies business. He takes his character from TCM: NEXT GENERATION and kicks it up 100 notches. He is cool and collected one minute, then can flip the switch in a second to cold-blooded murderer and ranting lunatic. There is scene between Killer Joe and the young sister Dottie that will have you questioning your morals. Shit gets weird. The scenes of violence come out of left field and are brutal as hell. You will never look at a piece of fried chicken the same way again. He makes a bloodied and bashed Gina Gershon suck on the chicken leg like it’s his dick while giving a monologue on the etiquette of paying for services rendered, good shit.  The ending is where most of the blood shed happens, and there is a LOT! Bullet wounds and face bashing are the main course in this movie. The way the violence is shot and fantastic gore effects make it very realistic and believable.

I really can’t say enough good things about KILLER JOE. It is paced perfectly, violent, funny, suspenseful, and VERY well acted. It pulls off the dirty white trash vibe perfectly. There are some plot twists that really add to the story that I didn’t see coming. It may not be the most violent or gory movie that I have ever seen, but Matthew McConaughey’s performance is definitely SNUFF worthy! Check this movie out as soon as possible,

I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE! 2010

By Jimmy Squarejaw

*WARNING*
All movies reviewed for SUNDAY SNUFF contain graphic depictions that may include rape, live animals being murdered, and extreme gore.  None of the writers condone such acts we just watch this shit.

This movie, along with LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, are the two remakes that I really thought were going to be big steaming piles of elephant semen.  I just couldn’t get my head around how they could do the originals justice.  After watching it though I became a believer.  I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE follows the original closely adding a few things but also lacking a little in a few areas.  The cover also has more underwear going into the main character's ass so there is always that!

Like the original, the 2010 remake begins with the main character Jennifer heading out of the big city to spend sometime at a rental cabin in a rural buttfuck hee-haw town.  She pulls into a gas station where she enchants all of the local guy’s groins while managing to embarrass the main gas jockey Johnny after a terribly executed pickup line.  Jennifer then heads on down to the cabin and makes herself at home with a liquor cabinet full of wine and a sack of doobie puff sticks.  The gas station hooligans show up one night and start in on the humiliation with cameras in hand.  The story starts to differ from the original when Jennifer breaks free from her tormentors and goes tearing through the woods screaming for help until she comes upon two hunters, one is the kooky old timer who rented her the cabin and the other is the local sheriff.  Sheriff Storch, played amazingly by Andrew Howard, leads her back to the cabin to confront the roustabouts but instead he finds an empty house with used marijuana cigarettes and enough booze to kill Anna Nicole Smith…….again.  The Sheriff starts in on the lectures and then to her surprise lets the group of gas station jerks back into the house.  Well shit, they’re all in on it and Jennifer’s holes are going to pay the price.  Now comes the rape and the movie switches back to the similar storyline as the original.

The rape scenes were definitely the content that got compromised in the remake for obvious commercial reasons but it’s still violent and pretty shocking for a movie sold at Wal-Mart.  I think the added character of Sheriff Storch adds a hell of a lot to the movie though.  He’s fucking vile and when his wife and young daughter are brought into the storyline it creates a whole new kind of tension in the movie.  And the last thing that I think was really amazing about the movie was the ending.  Yes, if you think about it too much you will find the impracticality of how Jennifer can capture, move, and then setup the rapist gang in different scenarios of torturous revenge.  But if you just sit back and enjoy it really is a brutal ending that is entertaining as hell!  One part of the remake that didn't resonate with me was the main group of gas station bullies compared to the original movie.  There was just something more sleazy and realistic to the group in the original that these guys didn't capture.

For me the perfect blend would be the original I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE storyline, characters, and raw brutality, but add that kooky character Sheriff Storch, and use the big budget violence of the remake.  Definitely worth a watch and you can find the combo pack of the original and remake with all of the extra features on Blu-Ray or DVD for super cheap.

Blake and Jimmy’s Extreme-O-Gauge!

Realistic Gore: 4 out of 5, it’s not through the whole movie but the ending more than makes up for it.
Rape: 3 out of 5, yes it’s brutal but not as insane as the original.
Animal Death: 0 out of 0.
Necrophilia: 0 out of 0
Torture: 3 out of 5, not as rough as I’ve seen but there are still a few torturous goodies in their.
Overall Movie:  3 out of 5, good flick that has it’s merits but it doesn’t hold up to the original.
